Letter A Lesson Plan

State Standard

  • K.2(A): Identify and name the uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet.
  • K.1(B): Follow classroom procedures and multi‑step directions.
  • K.11(A): Develop handwriting by accurately forming uppercase and lowercase letters.

Teaching Model

Gradual Release Model (I Do → We Do → You Do)

  • I Do: Teacher models tracing and drawing the letter A.
  • We Do: Students practice tracing together with guidance.
  • You Do: Students independently draw the letter A and create greeting cards.

Objective

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Correctly trace uppercase and lowercase A/a.
  • Independently draw the letter A with correct formation.
  • Create five greeting cards featuring the letter A and write names beginning with A.

Materials

  • Magical Alphabet Story Book
  • Pencils
  • Crayons or markers
  • Blank paper or pre‑cut greeting card templates
  • Name list from the student book

Instructional Procedures

1. Introduction (I Do)

  • Show students the uppercase A and lowercase a.
  • Model how to trace each letter slowly.
  • Demonstrate how to draw the letter A.

2. Guided Practice (We Do)

Students open their Magical Alphabet Story Book.

Guide them through:

  • Uppercase A tracing
  • Lowercase a tracing
  • Provide verbal cues and visual reminders as needed.

3. Independent Practice (You Do)

Students draw the letter A in the drawing section of their book.

  • Only this drawing will be graded.

4. Greeting Card Activity

Students will:

  1. Create five greeting cards.
  2. Add a letter A on the cover of each card.
  3. Inside each card:

  • Write a first name that starts with A.
  • Include information related to that first name.

  3. Inside each card:

  • Write a last name that starts with A.
  • Include information related to that last name.

Each card must include a different A‑name. (Go to the Magical Alphabet Story Book for an example)

5. Assessment

  • Students share the link to their website for a grade.
